Grayscale of Light /

A Residential Space Shaped by Light, Material and Everyday Life

Grayscale of Light is a 20-ping residence in New Taipei City designed around the relationship between light, material and everyday life. Rather than treating gray as a predetermined aesthetic, the project uses different tonalities, textures, reflections and degrees of transparency to allow light to continuously reshape the perception of space. Public and private areas are differentiated through shifts in color, material and spatial atmosphere, creating a sequence of subtle transitions throughout the home.

Spatial Continuity

The space is organized as a continuous sequence rather than a collection of independent rooms. The kitchen, dining area and living room unfold along an open axis of everyday life, while the dark architectural volume and continuous flooring reinforce visual continuity. Subtle changes in ceiling height, material, color and light create gradual transitions between public and private areas.

Light as Spatial Medium

Light is not treated simply as illumination, but as a medium that shapes the perception of space. Filtered through the curtains, natural light falls across walls, flooring and furniture at varying intensities, revealing subtle differences within the grayscale palette. As light shifts throughout the day, shadows, reflections and tonal variations continuously alter the depth and atmosphere of the interior.

Material and Grayscale

Grayscale is not treated simply as a color palette, but as a way of establishing spatial depth through differences in material, surface texture and reflectivity. Low-chroma gray walls and flooring form a continuous background, while the dark kitchen and storage volumes introduce a distinct sense of mass. White surfaces and metal details add further contrast, allowing different functions to retain their own material character within a restrained tonal range.

Everyday Life

The space ultimately returns to everyday life. The dining table, kitchen, television and storage are integrated into a continuous living environment, where furniture and everyday objects become part of the rhythm of inhabitation rather than simply functional elements. Changing natural light along the windows further alters the tonal quality and atmosphere of the space throughout the day, allowing the home to evolve with time and daily life.
